What is IMDG Code Special Provision 274?
Special Provision 274 (SP274) of the IMDG Code requires the technical name of a dangerous substance to be included alongside the Proper Shipping Name (PSN) for certain dangerous goods entries.
This provision is most commonly encountered when shipping N.O.S. (Not Otherwise Specified) dangerous goods. Including the correct technical name helps emergency responders, carriers and regulatory authorities accurately identify the hazardous substance being transported.
When Does SP274 Apply?
SP274 applies to dangerous goods entries in the Dangerous Goods List where Column 6 references Special Provision 274.
Examples include many generic entries such as:
- UN1993 – Flammable Liquid, N.O.S.
- UN2924 – Flammable Liquid, Corrosive, N.O.S.
- UN3082 – Environmentally Hazardous Substance, Liquid, N.O.S.
- UN3077 – Environmentally Hazardous Substance, Solid, N.O.S.
If SP274 is assigned, the technical name must be added after the Proper Shipping Name.
How Should the Technical Name Be Shown?
The technical name must appear in brackets immediately following the Proper Shipping Name.
Example:
UN1993, FLAMMABLE LIQUID, N.O.S. (Contains Xylene), 3, PG II
The technical name should identify the hazardous constituent that most accurately describes the danger presented by the product. Trade names, product codes and brand names must not be used as technical names.
